Canada Pushes for USMCA Extension Amid Tough US Trade Talks

A 16-year extension of the USMCA free trade deal has been officially sought by Canada before the July 1 deadline and describes it as a very favorable arrangement. Nevertheless, Canada-US talks are behind Canada-Mexico talks because of disagreements over sector-specific tariffs and automobile manufacturing. As the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, wants to get US tariffs on steel, aluminum, and timber withdrawn, US trade representative, Jamieson Greer, is anticipating that Canada will have to agree on certain tariffs and that Canada needs to include more US parts in cars as well as provide access to its dairy market. On the other hand, the US finds it frustrating how Canada has reacted to US tariffs through retaliatory actions like boycotting their spirits.
